New Calves hitting the ground

We are almost halfway through with our cows calving. We had some go earlier than we expected. Jigsaw gave us Stormtrooper 2, a very nice steer calf out of Luke Skywalker, dob May 4th, She calved back in February so he is several months old. He was born a deep red just like Jigsaw his dam was and changed to black within two months. He is destined to be a steer as his mom is 45 inches and we are breeding for smaller so we keep only bulls that meet high expectations.

The next calf to hit the ground was out of our fastest to to 48 inch horned dam, My My My, or as we call her Mya. This little guy was not expected yet for a month we thought. We went up to move all our mama cows down off the foothill to irrigated pasture for the summer and as we caught them up we realized she was missing. Shortly she came trotting over the hill with the rest of the herd. I inspected her to see she had calved. Which created a dilemma, to turn her loose to hopefully catch her and calf back or go look for calf. I had my kids with me so we headed out, mindful to not find any rattlesnakes. Whoever finds the calf gets to name it I told them to get their eyes open. Well we made it all the way to the back fence, fortunately on our first pass. Sophia, found it bedded down in grass not daring to move. We videoed as I crept up to it and started petting it. It just laid there and let all the kids also pet it. I finally picked it up and started carrying it back to the trailer. Momma was penned up, so we were only a little concered mom would come hunting us. part way back it woke up and started fighting. We did get it all the way into the trailer. Thenn we got the moms all loaded and got them down the hill. We managed to not get a single photo only the video of her baby. So have to go back and get one of him. He is named Romeo Stormtrooper as Sophia picked Romeo and he has the same markinngs as the other stormtroopers.

The next one was a complete surprise at only 11 months from her last calving, Spanky dropped us a little red and white heifer. We were caught completely off guard with this early arrival. It is our first heifer from Dr Seuss so we plan to keep her and see what she grows into. We were dropping by to see how the moms were as they had just been moved only a few days. We pulled up and away Spanky goes trotting off away from the herd. I said to myself she is looking for her calf. Sure enough she heads straight over to it. It jumps up and starts following mom. I could only catch a quick picture of her but was could tell it was a heifer.
